What Songs Can You Play (with the Chords You Already Know)?

easy guitar songsMany beginners on the guitar and ukulele run into a familiar problem. They find themselves stuck, playing the same tune again and again.

Getting good at that target song isn’t very hard. After all, most beginner tunes only use a handful of simple chords. Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds is a classic example. It’s playable with G, D, and C, making it the perfect entry tune for newbies.

But if that’s the only song you’re practicing, it can get a little boring. It’s an easy song to master. However, getting there takes a lot of repetition.

But throwing in other “G, D, C” tunes can help a lot. For example:

  • If you can play Three Little Birds, you can also play La Bamba.
  • If you know La Bamba, you also know The Lion Sleeps Tonight.
  • If you can play The Lion Sleeps Tonight, you can play Ring of Fire.

That’s because they all use the same 3 beginner chords. And this means you can alternate between them and still get the same “practice” (minus the boredom).

Don’t like these specific examples? That’s fine. There are literally hundreds of easy ukulele songs and guitar tunes that are all playable with the same 3 chords, whether you’re working on:

  • G, D, C
  • F, G, C
  • D, E, A

And the Chord Genome Project is a free tool that makes finding these tunes incredibly easy. Do a search of the chords you know, and it’ll show you all the songs that you can play.
