Excellence is not a skill you were born with. Excellence is something you can pursue. Doing the best of what you are capable of is a way of life. You can choose to do it or not. It is your choice. Once you choose to pursue excellence, you can only do it by persevering no matter what the circumstances are. And the fact is, that you can never be quite done because it is a process that never ends.

Below is a four step process that can help you become that excellent guitarist you always wanted to be. Just follow the steps.

It all starts with a vision. It all starts with that picture in your head where you see yourself playing in front of 5 000 people. It starts with that sound that you want to be known for or with a feeling that pulls you out of the bed. Once you find something that is so precious to you that you can’t afford to loose it, your responsibility is to make it a reality. You need to work backwards from your vision and find actionable steps that will lead you towards your goals.

You have to strengthen your vision by finding the reasons why. You need to ask yourself: Why do I want to be that great player? Why does it matter to me? What are my motives? Don’t skip this part as many people do. It is vitaly important for making your vision a reality. If your reasons are strong enough, if you really know why you do what you do, you can overcome any obstacle and any setback. Your reasons are your lifejacket when you are ready to give up and quit. When you feel like nobody supports you, when you feel like everything is going in the wrong direction, you have to revisit them to get that extra push you need. It is very powerful to know that what you do does have a meaning. Don’t forget to cultivate your reasons why so they are as strong as possible. Spend some time to write them down and make it a habit to think about them everyday.

Did you find your reasons? Ok. Here is the the next step? Show up! Show up on rainy days, show up on snowy days, show up on sunny days. Show up on weekends, holidays, birthdays and every other day throughout the year. When you are pursuing your dreams, there are no weekends or holidays. We’ve got only one chance in this life to make it right, so we should not miss it. Take breaks as necessary, make sure you rest enough so you are full of energy and vitality. And when there is time to make you vision a reality, show up!

Is showing up enough? Not really. The next step is to put in the work. Showing up without putting in the work means nothing. And we all know that it takes a lot of hard work to get where we want to get. There is no substitute for hard work. And the person who needs to do it, is you. There is no such a teacher who can get it done for you. Many people can help you, that is for sure, but you are the only one who can do what needs to be done. It is your responsibility to show up and work. It is all up to you. You have to decide what is important and what is not. You have to show what your priorities are. Don’t talk about them, live them.

So you created a vision, you showed up and put in the work? You ask: “What’s next?” The answer is: “Do it again.” Sharpen your vision, show up when you don’t feel like showing up and work until you get what you want. And then start again. As we said before, this process never ends. You can either grow or shrink. You’ve got to decide.
