SMG Review: The Taylor GS Mini Acoustic Guitar
The Taylor GS Mini Acoustic Guitar makes it possible to bring value and tone to every home
OFF THE RACK
If you’re looking for BIG sound in a slightly smaller package, look no further. The Taylor GS Mini has evolved from the ‘Baby‘ line of Taylor guitars with improved tone, playability, style and quality at an affordable price.
After unpacking the GS Mini from its box, my first impression was that this small box must contain some sort of gimmick. At best this must be some newer version of a travel guitar for beach jams and camp fire songs. Furthermore, this could not be a full sounding gig worthy acoustic guitar inside the box, could it?
Well lets get back to that in a second. As I continued to unpacked the GS Mini I was impressed with the quality gig bag that the guitar arrived in. The case features smooth and sturdy zippers that you can tell were made to handle tons of abuse. The inner padding and case material used to protect the guitar were well thought out and nicely executed.
IT’S IN THE SMALL DETAILS
Finally I had the GS Mini in my hands. The guitar has a clean, cool look to it with the Sitka Spruce top and the ebony fretboard contrasting in a harmonious way. The addition of a tortoise pickguard and a rosette added a nice touch. With a few strums of the plectrum it was go time and I could not be stopped. The tone is warm and bright with nice bass and clear crisp tones when you single them out. Whether you play rhythm or lead, this baby sings!
This guitar is a great value at around $500! The tone and feel is very comparable to my Taylor 314ce (which is nearly three times the price). There is also an optional ES-Go plug-in pickup, which can be installed to the inside front part of the sound hole, and has been preset by the factory to easily install allowing you to crank this baby up for any gig big or small.

THE LOW DOWN
The GS Mini is a very comfortable and well balanced guitar. It is extremely easy and fun to play. The tone has that classic Taylor bite to it that resonates and rings through at a nice audio level for your acoustic needs. If you need to crank it up, grab the ES-Go plug-in pickup which retails for around $100. The GS Mini has a similar look and feel to the more expensive Taylor guitars as well as that consistency in tone Taylor offers, just in a smaller and more affordable package. This is a guitar that any player–both young or old and big or small–would enjoy adding to their arsenal.
Pros: Fun to play, Great tone, Light weight, Easy to transport, Optional Pickup system, Stays in tune, Great action.
Cons: Plain styling, Cutaway not available.
