SMG Review: Fender Custom Shop Robert Cray Signature Stratocaster Electric Guitar

Fender Custom Shop Robert Cray Stratocaster Electric Guitar

The Fender Stratocaster, often referred to as the “Strat”, is a model of electric guitar designed by Leo Fender, George Fullerton, and Freddie Tavares in 1954, and manufactured continuously by the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation to the present. It is a double-cutaway guitar, with an extended top horn for balance while standing. Along with the Gibson Les Paul, it is one of the most common models of electric guitar in the world.

The Fender Custom Shop Robert Cray Signature Stratocaster caught my eye with its gold hardware and deep blue finish; I just had to give it a go. Right away the tone was incredible. The vintage pickups are super smooth and crisp with just the right amount of break. The pickups are hotter than most vintage pickups, but these are far superior in my opinion. While retaining the single coil tone it has a much more beefy sound that is unique. The alder body adds a nice warm and rich tone to the package. It felt a little heavier than a standard Strat but more balanced at the same time. The neck is fast and comfortable with just the right amount of grip. You know me, I am not a fan of Fender necks, but this one was just right. This axe stayed in tune perfectly, even through some brutal bending of the blues.

This is a great axe with superb playability and tone. The neck is really versatile for any style of music. It doesn’t matter whether you are a shredder or a rhythm player,  you will love its action. The tone is ridiculously full and crisp with excellent harmonics. The sustain is smooth and brings life to the already brilliant tone.  If you are a fan of Robert Cray and his mellow soothing tone then you will love his signature axe! On a side note, this axe can be shaped into the closest I have ever heard to natural David Gilmour tone. If you are looking for that legendary Pink Floyd tone you need look no further. This is a killer axe that is worth the $4,000 plus needed to take it home.
